Butt implants are silicone devices that create a fuller, rounder buttocks shape for patients without enough fat for a BBL. The procedure takes about 2–3 hours, with 4–6 weeks of recovery. In Mexico, you can save 50–80% on cost while achieving natural, lasting results with Dr. Arturo Valdez in Cancun.
Take a look at any celebrity, and chances are, they’ve got huge buttocks. While the slim, stick-figure body was all the craze decades ago, that’s not in anymore. Today, a curvy and voluptuous figure is what’s desirable, which is good news for those who are naturally made that way.
For others, they may want a little help in the butt department. There’s only so much that the right clothing can accentuate, after all, and you want to get that gorgeous figure you’ve always desired.
While the Brazilian butt lift (BBL) is highly popular, another option is butt implants. If you’re interested in what these are and what the procedure to get them is like, then read on. This is your guide to buttock implants.
What Are Butt Implants?
Butt implants are also known as gluteal implants. They’re typically used when people want a more lifted, rounded, or fuller appearance for their butt, as the results are more dramatic than with a BBL. Plus, it’s a good alternative if you don’t have enough body fat for that procedure.
This type of plastic surgery can add balance or proportion to your hips and thighs. In fact, many people use it for the correction of asymmetry or reconstruction after they’ve gone through trauma in the area or have had significant weight loss.
What are butt implants made of? They’re made of silicone. This means that the implants feel firm, yet flexible.
What Do Butt Implants Look Like?
What butt implants look like will depend on which style you get; there are four in total.
The most popularly used style is Style 3. It’s a round and non-directional (round) implant, which means that there’s almost no risk of it moving or shifting.
Styles 1 and 2 are directional (anatomical, similar to a teardrop shape) implants, and they need specific orientations and placements. That means that you can’t predict how they’ll look, as it depends on the former factors.
Style 4 is a custom butt implant that has mirrored left and right sides.
Placement Dependence
How the buttock implants look will also depend on where your plastic surgeon places them.
One option is placing the implants on the inside of your gluteal muscle. You have less of a chance of sciatic nerve damage, but there’s a chance the implant may stick out. As a result, it won’t look very natural.
One other option is having the implants placed below your gluteal muscle. You’ll get more natural results, but you risk damaging the sciatic nerve.
Who’s a Good Candidate for Butt Implants?
As we’ve said earlier, those who want a larger posterior but lack sufficient fat for a BBL are good candidates. But what else?
Good candidates should:
- Be in good overall health
- Want a permanent, significant enhancement
- Have realistic expectations
- Don’t smoke (or can stop before and after surgery)
On the other hand, you may be a poor candidate if you have:
- Poor wound healing
- Uncontrolled medical conditions
- Unrealistic expectations
How the Butt Implant Procedure Works
First, you’ll have a consultation with your plastic surgeon, who should be board-certified and have certifications. Together, you’ll discuss what your goals are (desired size and shape).
From there, they’ll determine if that’s possible, based on your:
- Skin elasticity
- Muscle structure
- General health
- Suitability for surgery
Some people may also opt for combining implants with liposuction or fat grafting, as that’ll result in better contouring. Ask your surgeon if that’s what you’re interested in.
The Surgery Itself
Usually, buttock implant surgery is performed under general anesthesia. However, some people get epidural anesthesia with sedation.
Either way, once you’re under, your plastic surgeon will make an incision. The most discreet and preferred option is between the buttocks (intergluteal crease), but the upper buttock fold is sometimes used for specific implant positions.
Then, they’ll create a pocket for your butt implant in one of three areas:
- Intramuscular (inside the gluteus muscle)
- Submuscular (below the muscle)
- Subfascial (above the muscle fascia)
After the implant is inserted, your surgeon will close the incision with sutures. They’ll apply a compression garment to reduce swelling. It’ll help the tissue settle too.
Recovery and Aftercare for Butt Implants
Right after the surgery, you should expect swelling, soreness, and tightness for several days. You can use prescribed pain medications and antibiotics to help manage the discomfort and prevent infection.
In the first few weeks, you’ll need to avoid sitting or lying directly on your buttocks. To protect the implants, sleep on your stomach or sides.
While you can return to light activity after 2-3 weeks, you probably can’t do full activity (including exercise) until after 6-8 weeks. Plus, you won’t see the final results appear until after 3-6 months, which is when the swelling will fully resolve.
Potential Risks and Complications
Butt implants require surgery, and surgery always carries potential risks and complications. They include:
- Infection or bleeding
- Seroma or fluid buildup
- Implant displacement or rotation
- Capsular contracture (hardening around the implant)
- Asymmetry
- Scarring
- Nerve or muscle injury (rare)
To minimize your risks and to have a smoother surgery and recovery period, vet your plastic surgeon options. Make sure they’re board-certified, have extensive experience, and have good patient reviews.
How Long Do Buttock Implants Last?
The great news is that buttock implants are long-lasting. But do note that for some people, they’ll need either a replacement or revision after 10-15 years.
The Cost of Butt Implants
The average cost of buttock implants in the US is $7,964, and this is for the surgery alone. So once you factor in other costs (such as anesthesia, surgeon’s fee, operating room facilities, etc.), it may be well over $10,000 for the procedure.
An excellent alternative is having your surgery done in Mexico. You can save anywhere between 50% to 80%, and it’s just as safe!
Look Into Getting Butt Implants
Butt implants can be a wonderful solution if you feel your posterior is too small, yet you don’t have enough body fat for a fat transfer (BBL). While it may take a few months to fully recover, it’ll pay off when you have dramatic long-term results.
