What is Butt Lift / Butt Augmentation?

Dr. Arturo Valdez: Specialist in Butt Lift / Butt Augmentation

A buttock lift is a cosmetic procedure that reshapes and enhances the buttock area by removing or repositioning sagging skin and removing or adding volume to the buttock area.
A standard buttock lift removes excess fat and volume (through surgical resection or liposuction).
Alternatively, a buttock augmentation (Brazilian Butt lift) using fat transfer or using silicone gel buttock implants can add volume to enlarge the buttocks to give more projection and volume, to create a slimmer profile.

Why have a Butt Lift / Butt Augmentation?

Excess skin, aging fat, hereditary factors or drastic weight loss can cause the buttocks to lose their shape and the skin to sag.
In addition, buttock enhancements have become increasingly popular around the world, and round, firm buttocks are often considered a symbol of femininity and sensuality.
If you want to restore the youthful shape of your buttocks or add volume to your buttocks, a buttock lift may be right for you.

What should I consider before having a Butt Lift / Butt Augmentation?

Dr. Valdez uses international protocols for patient selection. You must be in good general health, with no chronic diseases, such as diabetes or heart disease. People in poor health are not good candidates for buttock procedures. You must obtain clearance from your primary care physician or the physicians who are treating you for your medical conditions.
You cannot smoke. Smoking slows the healing process and increases the risk of serious complications during and after surgery. If you smoke, you must quit at least one month before your surgery.
You should eat a healthy diet. Problems such as protein deficiencies can interfere with the healing of your wounds.
If you recently had drastic weight loss or underwent bariatric surgery, you should be close to your ideal weight. Your weight should be stable for at least six months, with no further weight loss expected.

For optimal results, a butt lift should not be performed until approximately two years after the start of any drastic weight loss program. This time allows your skin to retract as much as possible and your nutrition to stabilize and optimize, both of which will help your recovery.

How to know if a BBL or Butt Augmentation is right for you

A standard butt lift could result in a loss of volume in the buttocks (if you are not also having a BBL fat transfer or implants).
If you are very thin and desire a significant increase in Volume you may need buttock implants to achieve the size you desire, as you may not have enough fat to transfer. It is possible that the buttock implants may slip after the operation or some of the fat may be reabsorbed, causing asymmetry.
There are several buttock lift options. Dr. Valdez will recommend a surgical plan based on your body shape and aesthetic goals, including whether you are looking to reduce or increase the size of your buttocks.

Standard Buttock Lift

If you have sagging buttocks after weight loss or due to the aging process and are looking to reshape, lift or reduce the size of your buttocks, you may need a buttock lift.
Depending on the quality of your skin, the amount of excess skin or fat that needs to be removed and your body shape, Dr. Valdez will explain which is your best option.
If you want to add volume to your buttocks and you have enough excess fat in other areas of your body, your best option may be a fat transfer to the buttocks and your hips to improve the overall contour of your silhouette. This procedure takes fat from one area of your body and uses it to enhance and reshape your buttocks and hip area which improves and accentuates your curves.
In order to perform a fat transfer, it is necessary to perform liposuction to collect fat tissue from areas of your body such as the abdomen, flanks, trochanteric region, back or thighs, this fat is processed and fat transfer or fat grafting is prepared in the chosen areas.
Typically, there are three to five small incisions to inject the fat, but these incision sites are easily concealed with clothing.

During this process Dr. Valdez uses technologies such as MicroAir liposuction and Ultrasound liposuction to harvest the fat.

Not all of the fat transferred in a BBL procedure survives, and the final result may be somewhat smaller than initially projected. You may need to repeat the procedures (second or third round) to achieve the desired results.

Buttock Implants

If you desire a more rounded appearance and you are very thin with little excess fat, buttock implants may be your best option.

Buttock implants are best suited to treat flat or poorly defined buttocks. Buttock implants are not as effective for treating sagging buttocks that can occur after significant weight loss. In this case, you may want to consider combining your buttock implants with a buttock lift.

For this procedure, Dr. Valdez uses a highly cohesive silicone gel implant, which can be either round or anatomically shaped (almond or diamond) depending on the shape and height of your buttock region, the implant is inserted through an incision hidden within the natural crease of the buttocks.
The implant is placed in a pocket in the middle of the gluteus maximus muscle. Drains and a compression garment are required for this surgery.

An important warning for all patients: Silicone injections are an unsafe and unacceptable option for buttock augmentation. These injections are often offered by individuals without a medical license or proper education and training and should be avoided.
If you are considering a buttock augmentation procedure, always consult with a board certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Valdez in order to minimize the possible risks and have a safe surgery.
